Prestongrange Church awarded National Lottery Fund support
Prestongrange Church has received a confirmed National Lottery grant of £37,300 for essential repairs to the Church Roof, it was announced today. The funding will be matched with £37,300 from Historic Environment Scotland. The project will provide increased opportunity for the Community and visitors to gain historical knowledge of the Church and Parish in a safe environment.
Supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund the project will carry out essential repairs to the roof, develop an exhibition area within the church and train volunteers to lead talks on the heritage of the Church.
The building is a focal point for the local community and is currently used by around 12 community groups. It was built in 1595 and, while its main purpose is as a place of worship, it is used for meetings, events and concerts.
Prestongrange Church is a Grade A listed building. It is one of the first churches to be built in Scotland following the Reformation in 1560. The original church was financed by its first Minister, John Davidson, on land gifted by the Hamilton Family. Some of the grave stones in the church yard are for soldiers from the Battle of Prestonpans.
Linda Watters, spokesperson for the Prestongrange Church project, said: “We are delighted that we have received this support thanks to National Lottery players. Prestongrange Church has been a significant part of the history of Prestonpans for over 400 years, and it is great to know that we are able to preserve its heritage for our community in the future.”
Lucy Casot, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Scotland said: “Scotland’s historic and diverse places of worship are so often at the heart of our communities. Thanks to National Lottery players HLF funds urgent structural repairs and also a range of activities for the local community to engage with the heritage of the church. Prestongrange Church is an excellent example of how HLF can help conserve a much loved building so it can continue to serve its local community.
